The Elizabeth Kostova Foundation and Vagabond, Bulgaria's English Monthly, cooperate in order to enrich the English language with translations of contemporary Bulgarian writers. Each month we give you the chance to read a selected excerpt of a Bulgarian writer. Some of the presented writers will be translated in English for the first time. Enjoy our fiction pages.

Sozopol Fiction Seminars - Edition 2009 Print E-mail

This year’s line-up features:

  • 10 emerging and aspiring writers from Bulgaria and the United States, who were selected among 105 candidates coming from 13 countries;
  • Leading American and Bulgarian publishers and writers;
  • 4 engaging topics stemming from the contemporary literature landscapes.

The Seminar will take place between 4 and 8 of June in Sozopol with an exclusive fringe event in Sofia organized in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy.

SOZOPOL, 4-8 June

The Sozopol’s seminar line-up includes:

  • Creative writing workshops led by Elizabeth Kostova and Emilia Dvoryanova;
  • Guest-lectures by Georgi Gospodinov and Josip Novakovich;
  • Round Tables on writing and editing literary texts, art of translation and creating readership with the special participation of John O’Brien of Dalkey Archive Press (U.S.), Reagan Arthur of Little, Brown & Co, the winners of the Dyankov Translation Award for 2008 etc.
  • Literary readings by the American and the Bulgarian writers.

SOFIA, 9 June

Sofia’s event line-up features:

  • Lecture by Josip Novakovich and promotion of the Bulgarian edition of his book Fiction Writers’ Workshop (Ciela, 2009);
  • Roundtable on Literature diplomacy with the participation of American and Bulgarian writers, editors, publishers, translators, critics and agents, among which: Alek Popov, Amelia Licheva, Boyko Penchev, Georgi Gospodinov, Daniel Kalchev (tbc), Elizabeth Kostova, Emilia Dvoryanova, Iglika Vassileva, John O’Brien, Josip Novakovich, Kapka Kassabova, Miglena Nikolchina, Reagen Arthur, Raimond Wagenstein, Svetlozar Zhelev, Theodora Dimova, Yana Genova.
  • Literary reading of the Sozopol Fiction Seminar’s fellows: Alexander Shpatov, Alexandra Chaushova, Evgeni Cherepov, Jeremiah Chamberlin, Kodi Scheer, Lana Santoni, Maria Doneva, Maya Sloan, Steven Wingate, Yanitza Radeva
