Summer Creative Writing Camp with Delaney Nolan, June 29-July 3, 2017

"Minds that have been unhinged from their old faith and love, have perhaps sought this Lethean influence of exile, in which the past becomes dreamy because its symbols have all vanished, and the present too is dreamy because it is linked with no memories."
-- George Eliot, Silas Marner
Writing creative nonfiction seems straightforward: all you have to do is tell a story that's true. But when we rely on our memories for the truth, this becomes a bit more difficult.
In this workshop, we will focus on Travel Writing, though our definition of travel will remain flexible. Whether you would like to capture your arduous journey to the hissing sands of the Sahara, or a long drive home on a wet night, we will focus on how to capture scene, setting, and movement in a personal essay.
Our goal will be to understand and use the basic techniques of writing creative nonfiction. To this end, we will be looking at short nonfiction pieces from around the world, and will use what we learn while crafting our own nonfiction experiments. You will finish the seminar with a personal essay that deals, in some way or another, with travel. Bon voyage.
